GRASS-ROOTS FINE ART GALLERY OPEN IN THE HEIGHTS
ORIGINAL AND UNIQUE OFFERINGS FROM HOUSTON'S LOCAL ART SCENE
Welcome to H Gallery, located at 327 W. 19th St. in the Historic Heights District of Houston, Texas.
Now in it's fourth year of operation, Founding Artist Heidi Powell-Prera is pleased to continue providing a quality, respected venue for local artists to display and sell their work in a professional environment.
The diverse collection of original fine art is constantly changing, comprising an eclectic range of works which includes oil, acrylic, water-color, and gouache paintings; sculpture; mixed-media; photography; and digital production.
The gallery first opened in Spring, 2004, headed by Powell-Prera along with two additional partners, who have since moved on to new and creative ventures of their own.
The business spawned from a shared belief between the three artists that there existed an intense public desire for high-quality, affordable original art, a niche market not being fully addressed by a crowded and overpriced gallery marketplace that tends to cater to the out of town artist.
Powell-Prera is a photographer and fine artist who has studied the creative arts her entire life. She studied photographic technique at the Glasselle School of Art in Houston under Amy Blakemore for 6 years.
Although sole director of H Gallery, she is assisted in the daily operations of the business by a team of volunteer artists who generously give of their time. This allows the gallery to display works of little known, known and emerging artists for a minimal fee.
Powell-Prera believes that an essential element of success for H Gallery has been the warm, community experience offered immediately to the customer and artist. "Having the artists on-hand to meet the public during business hours, not just at exclusive showings or group events, is a special bonus which I think makes the customer appreciate the art even more," she says.
Work is not harshly juried, so therefore the gallery offers artists a place to exhibit their work without fear of biased critique or rejection. All age groups as well as levels of experience are invited to submit work, which provides the art-buying public a refreshing variety of style and media from which to choose. The spirit of cooperation maintained by the volunteer support staff of artists also helps the unseasoned beginner as he or she may find a more experienced artist to serve as a mentor. Now, entering its 4th year of operation, H Gallery has attracted the attention of some very well-known and respected artists, not only from Houston, but also from other states and countries.
"We believe the special quality of the art we show reflects the spirit, surroundings, and talent of not only its creators, but of the great city of Houston itself," concludes the director.
